Video Example of Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

This video may take a few seconds to start playing.

This is an example of an actual ultrasound image demonstrating ultrasound guided sclerotherapy. The needle can be seen coming in from the right side of the image and puncturing a small vessel.

The target vessel is about one millimeter (or 1/25th of an inch) in diameter. These are the type of vessels that typically supply blood to spider veins. This vein is located about five millimeters (or one-fourth of an inch) below the skin.

You can see that the needle is a little less than one millimeter in diameter. The sclerosant that is injected is foamed. The air in the foam produces the white on the ultrasound image.
