Video Example of Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

This video may take a few seconds to start playing.

This is a split screen demonstration of the way that ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is done.

The ultrasound probe is held in the left hand of the physician, and the target vein is located. A syringe with a #26 gauge needle is held in the right hand, and inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance.

The sclerosant, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, is foamed with air prior to the injection. "Foaming" the medication causes it to be about twice as effective, and has proven to be extremely safe.
